HobbyKing 3D Printer Filament 1.75mm PLA 1KG Spool (Black)

HobbyKing have come out with a huge new range of 3D Printer Filaments at prices that will have you printing all day and all night.

The range covers PLA, ABS, Flexible, Color Changing, Luminous, Nylon, Polycarbonate, Acetal (POM), Metal Composite and even a water soluble filament for printing molds. So there is a filament for every project you have in mind. HobbyKing filaments have a stable melting point, good round shape and most importantly a 0.05mm uniform diameter tolerance for a consistent flow rate.

PLA:

PLA has a lower melting point and prints easier than other materials. One of the most important features is that PLA is non-toxic, and even has a sweet smell when printing. PLA has a low shrinkage rate and it is very rigid with minimal flex. This material can print extremely high resolution models and is perfect for a wide range of uses. PLA is considered stronger than ABS but is more susceptible to cracking when subjected to flexing, impact or torsional loads so the mechanical needs of the print project need to be evaluated.

PLA has a huge range of vibrant colors and opacity for that perfect look whether it is artistic or utilitarian, in short a great material for 3D printing. PLA can be printed without the use of a heat bead, and can stick to glass or a PCB plate with a binder such as hairspray or white glue for a curl free print.

3D printing is a fun and exciting hobby with a wide range of uses from prototyping parts to making toys for the kids. Picking the right filament for your application is very important.

Good but a little stringy.

Jan 20, 2022

Filament prints well, diamteter is accpetably consistent at 1.75mm, and i've found it prints best at about 210c on a creality ender 3 with a 60c bed heat.
The achilles heel with this filament is stringing, i've had a very hard time stopping it. however if you don't mind a little bit of post processing afterwards, this makes a reliable and cheap filament for quick prototyping.

okay

filament is okay, not as good as the silver metallic color, needs a bit higher temp to adhese the layers in my opinion.

Great price, great product.

I'm reasonably new to 3d printing, started using this on my Flashforge Finder (Hobbyking Purchase), it works great, no blockages, good colour consistency and the results have been excellent.

Decent but very picky with settings

Sep 06, 2018

So this PLA compared to the other brands I've tried is picky very picky. I can run most brands with zero issues, no under extrusion or sticking in the heat break etc. Just runs.
This PLA isn't that way, it tends to require a bit more heat to extrude properly and tends to jam in the heat break more often. Walking that fine line between getting jams even slight ones causing under extrusion and keeping it running is tricky. Now that said I've found at least on my machine running between 220-229C is the sweet spot, changing retraction doesn't seem to help. I'm running a E3D V6 which is somewhat known for heat break jamming with PLA. But like I mentioned no issues with other major brands filament with my settings.
Filament diameter is pretty all over the place, originally that was my thought on the jams, but come to find out it was actually heat creep because of the weird thermal characteristics of this filament. It's almost as though the Tg(glass transition temp) is lower, but the melt temp is higher. I'm not sure, that's purely a guess, but it seems that way or something like it. There is something weird thermal wise going on with this particular filament.
If you've had layer adhesion issues, try upping the temps but it's a fine line to too hot. But this is somewhat prone to that also.
Overall for the price it's a good value if you can tune your machine to run it. Is it worry free? No not in my experience, but it's also around half the price not counting shipping of most "budget" mainstream brands. So if you're willing to fiddle it might be worth it. And the prints are good pending it doesn't jam etc I've run a couple kilo's now and I've got it pretty reliable, but I'm still not surprised by a print failure either.

Basic Glossy Black PLA

Mar 19, 2018

This filament prints well enough. Hobbyking's silver PLA is one of my favorite filaments, but this one doesn't quite rate that high in my opinion. I think the glossy black (with maybe a tiny hint of midnight blue) has a tendency to reveal any printing flaws instead of hiding them. If you are looking for a matte black PLA, this filament is not for you.

good stuff!

Aug 04, 2017

For the money i didnt expect it to be as good as it is...
Printed on my original prusa i3 mk2, my prints come out really nice using this budget PLA, nice uniform layers and the colour is good. I'll definitely be ordering more.
