The Sopwith Camel was a British World War I single-seater fighter and first saw service at the Western Front in 1917. It was manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company and used a rotary aero engine and had twin synchronized Vickers machine guns firing forwards through the propeller arc. Though difficult to handle it was extremely maneuverable in the hands of an experienced pilot and was credited with shooting down 1,294 enemy aircraft, which was more than any other allied fighter.

Our model captures the very essence of this formidable World War I fighter, it has an open framework structure built from balsa and hardwoods and has a glass fiber radial cowl with a plastic molded dummy rotary engine and authentic-looking rigging wires. For ease of construction, all the parts are beautifully laser cut and are extremely accurate which will allow you to build the perfect model. Also included is a plastic molded cockpit surround with simulated padded cockpit coaming and left and right-hand front plastic molded fuselage fairings which simulate the aluminum side panels on the full-size aircraft. To complete the contents of this superb kit are a pair of vintage aircraft wheels, pre-bent and drilled aluminum wing struts and U/C legs, carbon tube wing spars and joiners plus a comprehensive hardware pack that includes rigging wire, nuts, and bolts, servo horns, rods, and connectors, etc.

The Sopwith Camel has been designed to use either a 35 or 42mm 500~600 watt electric outrunner brushless motor on a 5~6S lipo swinging a 14~15 inch prop or the equivalent gas/nitro engine. 4 standard size servos are more than adequate for the control surfaces.

Overall this is a fantastic kit and due to its ease of construction, it is perfect for the seasoned builder or those with limited building experience. Once finished in an authentic textured covering such as antique and olive drab Solartex and the addition of scale accessories such as a pilot and machine guns this Camel will really look the part and will turn many heads attacking the Hun at your local flying field or RC flying club.

Netter Baukasten für wenig Geld

Dec 11, 2021

This is not your traditional bursa flat kit. It is mainly laser cut plywood which fits together well. However there are some shortcomings.
There are no written instructions so assemble everything before gluing to make sure you have correct order of assembly.
There is no provision for attaching the lower wing, you will have to work this out yourself.
There are no provision for hinging the rear wing and stabiliser, the wood is too hard to make hinge slots and splits. I remade these parts out of bulsa wood.
No wing leading edge is provided.
There is no provision for fitting an i.c. Motor but it is not hard to do.
In summary the kit went together well but you need to know what you are doing.

Almost good, but too many lapses in quality/instructions.

Oct 02, 2021

As others have commented, the instructions with this kit are pretty sparse and if, for example, you assemble the fuselage in the order implied by the pictures, you will get into a tangle. It's essential to dry fit everything before using any glue.
Despite the claim in the description, it is not suitable for someone with limited building experience.
A few other nitpicks:
The wheels supplied in the kit look nothing like the wheels on a Sopwith Camel.
The two pre-drilled holes in the rudder for the control horn are at 90 deg to the correct orientation.
The pre-drilled holes in the aileron servo mounting plates do not match the holes in the wing where they are meant to be attached.
There is no explanation of how to attach the struts to the wings.
There is no mention of attaching the leading edges to the wings. As pictured in the instructions, the leading edges are flat.
On the bright side, most of the other parts fit well and there is a picture of each sheet of balsa or ply that shows where most of the parts can be found.
If you have built before and want a project to keep you busy, this could be it.
