Size Digital-Servos -> kein Problem!

This linear regulator looks good and has some nice features and actually works for a little while before it shuts down from thermal stress. I used it internally mounted in my 67" YAK-54 to power six S9252 digital servos. The battery was the Li-Fe 2300 mAh delivering a nice 6.6 volts. I set the output for 5.2 volts, but the voltmeter showed it as actually 5.1 Vdc. Now the YAK was gasoline powered and flew for about 15 minutes before the servos slowly went to sleep, ailerons first followed by the elevators. I couldn't control the shallow dive into planet earth. The DLUX linear was still hot to the touch. The chips used in these linear regulators ALL self protect by dropping the output voltage to limit the power dissipation. With the input/output voltage difference of only 1.5 volts and maybe 4 A of average current we had about six watts of regulator dissipation. I guess that was too much for long periods in a confined space.

I will fault HobbyKing for not specifying the maximum power and temperature rise. Please don't ever use this product in an enclosed space without super ventilation or for more than about five minutes without a cool-down period. Also the alarm trip level did not adjust, contrary to the instruction sheet. Just don't use the linear regulators, there are plenty of good switching BECs on the market.
