This superb Yak 54 is a sport scale model that really looks the part. The fiberglass fuselage has a deep gloss paint finish and the covering on the flying surfaces is a spot on colour match and is just as well applied, an extensive decal sheet is supplied for the final touch.

Servo's are standard size and for the power train, you will be looking at a 4s~5s set up that will spin a nice large prop. The balsa wing is of course plug in for easy transport and with a quick release canopy, this is a very practical and robust model that should look good for years to come. Not only does this model look great, it's cheap and the build cost is cheap, for such a great looking sport scale model, it's a steal!

I finally took the darn thing off the ground ! I had to keep very high speed, as soon as you let it slow down a bit, one of the wing tips stalls ... that's how I crashed it, unable to retake control after a loop THIS THING IS A VICIOUS BEAST. Receiver battery did burn on crash, some serious damage to structure. I'm debating if repairing is worth my time and money. HobbyKing you should remove this item from your inventory ! I don't know if you tested it seriously at all, or if the manufacturer modified it afterwards, but this plane should not be sold.

Hello
I runn an very big BL motor in it , normaly i Use that Motor in an 1.5m Plane !
The Battery is an 6S 4000ma/h i putt that gigant Battery all the way into the Front
But i cant set the right CG ! I needed 450g of Leed in the Front to Keep the CG !!!
The Landing gear does not look like the picture above its Made of poor Quality
Material ! I of Think it was nevver ever made for Elecktic engines !
The CG does not even fit with an 15ccm Nitro engine there is still need of 50g of Leed !
I hope im abel to bring it save in the Air . . . . .

Very disappointed by this ARF kit ... Almost is an understatement.
- poor instructions
- supplied link between elevators is too weak, with only one servo => elevators not aligned at angle;

- tail very HEAVY ; CG more than 3cm behind designated place with battery inside body
=> had to cut through front plate and motor mount to move the battery forward even more;
==> still 0.5cm behind !
I'm scratching my head now to get a correct balance, without adding nose weight to a plane that is already too heavy

I have still to try a first flight, with a dreadful feeling ...

When completed this model did weigh 3100g as detailed, and this equates to a massive wing loading of approx 35oz/sqft. I wish I could say it was a pleasure to fly, but it tip stalls if not moving at speed. I used an NTM 42-48 650kvA motor with an 80A escape, and a Zippy Compact 4000mAh 5 cell Lipo. This turned the 14x7 prop with purpose.
The kit is well made and covered. The fuselage would do well as a boat, it is more than sturdy fibreglass and is the dominant weight in the build - it is well painted. The supplied undercarriage collapsed during the first landing, and the rudder was also dislodged because the supplied mylar hinges were not capable of supporting the weight on the rear wheel.
I fitted cheap standard servos, and used the supplied pushrods and nylon control horns. They seemed crude but appeared to work ok
The wings slide onto a massively heavy 19.34mm diameter steel bar and are secured onto the fuselage using butterfly nut screws. The captive nuts in the wings broke loose when these butterfly bolts were only half way in and this meant some irritating rework. I fitted two M4 captive nuts in each wing using already drilled holes. This resolved the problem.
Having wasted $100 on this kit I will persevere but I dont think its going to be one of my favorites

I couldn't post a reply in comments for some reason but replying to the question about 6S Lipo on this model. I'm using a Turnigy G60 and a DLux 70A ESC with a 5S 5K LiPo. Just ground running seems to have plenty of power. No flights yet due travel and weather but I'll report back when I do. Weight is not a problem added up front in that you'll still need ballast to get the CG right even with bigger motors etc so using a 6S and a more powerful motor should improve performance considerably

The basic structure is far too heavy but of excelent quality. Mine works out at 3.5Kg on the runway giving a wing loading of 40oz per sq foot - very heavy indeed. This is exaserbated because of the considerable weight (300g on mine) needed in the nose for balance. The hardware quality is poor and needs to be replaced with decent stuff and the model should be regarded as an airframe only purchase. The detail in the structure is poor - the tail slot for example is too large, requiring shimming and the wing brace does not fit it's hole which is too small and has to be reamed out.

No flight yet because of weather and awaiting connectors but it should be an exciting but possibly short flight
