Why do we need a smoke or fume extractor while soldering?

Soldering requires the use of a flux, flux is primarily composed of a rosin resin mixed with a small amount of pine resin activator (a halogen organic agent. The main component of rosin is abietic acid, at soldering temperatures abietic acids denature to neo abietic acids. This process generates noxious components such as salycylic acid and pinene which are released in the evaporating smoke/fumes. The types of flux using large quantities of resin also generates phenol, and the pine resin activator generates hydrogen chloride.

Inhalation of these noxious components can result in headaches, nausea, eye irritation and other health and safety related problems. The use of the efficient 493LH extractor fan with the active carbon filters is highly effective in absorbing these noxious flux and lead fumes. Use the extractor in conjuction with the flexible 10m vent pipe (see related products) to pipe the fumes etc away from your work area. Replacement carbon filters are also available (see related items), these filters require changing regularly since the absorbtion capacity declines over time and dust can also adhere to the filters. The 493LH extractor is table top size so that it can get nice and close to the work area to remove all the smoke and fumes.

Activated carbon filters are small pieces of carbon that have been impregnated into a foam material and have been treated to become extremely porous. This gives the carbon a vast surface area that will capture more contaminents and be more effective at purifying the air.
