The Mitsubishi J8M Shusui was a World War II jet designed for the Japanese Navy and was based on the German ME-163 design. Only a small number of development planes were built to help combat the US Boeing B-29 bombers.

Durafly have based this model on one of the development planes that had a striking orange and silver color scheme which is combined with the highly detailed, molded EPO foam, strong carbon reinforcement and features a color matched hard plastic belly skid. The J8M Shusui still has the blistering performance of the earlier ME-163 and the wide track “dolly” for easier ground handling and take off.

As a PnF model, the J8M Shusui comes with all electronics pre-installed and requires you to hook up to your 6ch receiver. This is an easy build with only a few parts to be put together. A big hatch gives easy access to the battery bay and electronics.

This plane is designed with the more experienced pilots in mind. The J8M Shusui has incredible flight performance and is stable throughout the complete speed range. Full power climb outs, virtually unlimited vertical, huge loops, blistering rolls and very fast passes are easily had at full throttle. At slower speeds, the J8M Shusui is just as stable with no hint of a stall.

Using the recommended 2200mAh 30-65C 3S lipo and supplied 6x4 prop, you can expect flight times well beyond 6 minutes and with excellent performance throughout. But if you want a bit more punch then a 1300~2200mAh 4S 30C+ lipo can be used with the standard J8M Shusui setup.

For those of you looking for the ultimate scale experience, the optional rocket system is a simple drop-in affair (see manual for details), and will give you a thrill like no other. The working dolly-drop is activated at the flick of a switch on your transmitter, allowing for the most scale of take-offs.

It's time to “bounce” a few Allied planes at the local field.

Features:
• Fully functional dolly style undercarriage
• Ready-made for drop-in optional rocket motor system
• High level of pre-assembly and minimal part count
• Tough EPO construction with extensive carbon reinforcement
• Super smooth surface finish
• Stable and high performing aerodynamic design
• Large canopy/battery hatch for easy access to electronics
• Authentic and re-applied decals and paint finish
• Standard setup will run 3S and 4S lipo batteries

A Flying Wing that Stall Turns and Knife Edges

Oct 28, 2020

I had the original Kommet version of this and enjoyed flying it but it had a lot of repair time and I finally gave up on it after a bad but not unrepairable crash. I weakened when this was on sale for $150 and this one has 37 batteries for no crashes (hard landings not counted). I think the colour scheme helping with orientation is a big difference plus a few other TX/RX issues I have sorted out. With the stock esc/motor using 4.5 by 4.5 inch prop on a 4S 1800 I can get 165km/h level low passes. This is ground speed using a GPS and was downwind so is probably about 150km/h level air speed. In the same tests I was getting 180km/h ground speed after levelling out from steep WOT dives so it is a blast. Add to this that with its rudder and profile it can both do a yaw stall turn and also knife edge and it is just great fun. I mostly hand launch by gripping its underside fuselage and overarm launch it at full throttle which is a bit tricky to grip but it is reliable enough (but needs full throttle as it is sluggish until it gets airspeed up). I have not got the dolly worked out yet, having had some smooth take offs and bouncing horrors (though without any more than cosmetic damage) so I think having the battery a bit fore or aft may make a big difference to take off while not altering in flight performance noticeably. I am very glad I gave the Kommet/j8M another go.

An amazing product.

This model is a very high performance model at a bargain price. If you do not have an adjustable rate TX (if you do set the roll rate at a minimum), permanently affix the outer 5 inches of the elevons.

Cool, fast and stable

Oct 15, 2019

This plane is a high-speed plane. The main challenge is to start it, because you have to steer it with the rudder only. Nevertheless, when the plane is in the air it burns it. It is very fast, but stable and it is easy to control. The orange color is even better than the military colors of the ME. In a case of an accident, the plane is very easy to repair and it is very strong. This plane is an must have for speed junkies.

This is a superb high performance model.

This model has true vertical performance and is real speedster, yet at lower throttle settings it is a great flying kitten. I have two now just to make sure. It is a real bargain.

I like it a lot!

Oct 05, 2019

Everyone knows it is the Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet, but the licensed to Mitsubishi in Japan version. The color scheme is part of the reason this one is so appealing.
The model comes very well packed and secured in a plain white box. Unlike the first HobbyKing Me-163 that came in a huge box with the models' wing already attached, this version comes in a small box and the wings must be glued on by the purchaser. Everything fits well and it is easy to assemble.
I have not flown mine yet, but so far it makes an awesome display model in my hangar!
