Good motor

Dec 26, 2019

Good motor swings a 20 x 10 wood prop with gusto, running a YEP 120 Opto speed controller with a 10S battery. I have it installed in a Hangar 9 quarter scale super cub. I have not flown it yet, just waiting for the weather to calm down a bit. But from what I have seen so far I have little doubt it will be more than powerful enough for glider twinning.

Rotomax user comments

This quality Rotomax product is part of a range of outrunnes from 1.20 to 1.60 I use for my large war-birds and acrobats. The packaging box has all of the specs like prop size and Lipo cell count to make a reliable and efficient power system that will spin large props. I use YEP HV ESC with soft start and 18 degrees of timing. Only concern is the large rear bearing has a metal shield that under high temperatures operation can shed grease and cause rough running. Easy and cheap to replace with a shielded bearing.

Prop fitment problems

Nov 16, 2016

I have a Rotomax 1.60 and have purchased both APC 20x12e and Turnigy 20x12e props. Neither props have large enough hubs to drill out for the hub bolts. There is NO nurling on the back plate so how do I stop the prop from slipping.

Having now 15 flights on this setup:
Turnigy K-Force 120A-HV medium timing, 10s 5000 Zippy Compact (cheap but overrated, around 4400 true capacity), wooden prop 20x8 Menz, Current at full battery: 80A. Pulls endlessly powerful vertical on my 75" 3D Katana, 5.8kg AUW. Smooth running, no temperature issues. This is the reward when you don't go beyond the specs... Therefore 5 stars.
Prop 19x10 on 10s is alternative for faster planes.
NOTE1: suggested prop 21x13 seems for 8s max. It will overload and burn the motor / ESC at 10s.
NOTE2: Do NOT try Dlux or YEP, they seem incompatible with these motors.

Could be less weight vs power but good overall.
Run it on 10s 5800mah compact zippy and 80A with HK wood prop 19x10
19x12 was too much, Lipo cell become swollen.... Have it in HK Slick 540 30cc, 7kg and unlimited, gives 8 min flight time and 30pcnt remaining in Lipo.

With 10S Zippy Compact 5800 and a Wood Turney 19x12 it gives 7400 rpm
@3300w 90 A
I would like this motor a 150-200 gram lighter. Just run it for 4 flight in HK Slick 540 30cc size, flight weight is 6600 gram

Seems to be well made. 4 bolt prop mounting is a good system. The 10mm main shaft is tapped M4 to suit centrally fixed spinners. I'm using a Xoar 21" x 12" electric wood prop. Flying a 'Turning Trix' 1920mm wingspan aerobatic aircraft weighing 5.7Kg. Using 2 x 5S 40C LiPo in series and 120A opto ESC with 15A HV BEC. So far so good. Motor bearings are quiet and seem large enough to deal with some abuse. Mounting using stand-offs is simple and tidy. Fits in a reasonably tight cowl without modifications. Weight is good at 850grams for the 3kW output. I recommend it totally.

I have just run test and measurment on it.
Forget APC21x12 it is way over 80 amp with 10s
19x12 Turnigy Wood gives 90 A just at startup on new sharged acc.
I would like it to be 200 gram lighter...
Lot of motor for the money
