Fantastic model, not sure why people whine about it on any level.

This is a great glider kit, honestly anyone who whinges about building it needs to get a life. C'mon guys its a long way from building a balsa kit or making a plane from scratch. It goes together very quickly and with the right motor, esc and battery combo it flies beautifully, no vices or problems at all. Can fly without flaps easily but if sloping or in restricted landing areas the flaps work well to slow it down. With a 2215/09 motor, 30 Amp esc, stock 10x6 prop and 2200mah 3S pack I usually get 30 mins a flight in light thermal conditions.
At the price you get good hardware and solid foam which when you add in some reinforcing tape for the wing centre and packing tape for the wing leading edges (which you'd do for any foamy). Sure you can spend more and get a nicer kit but when you add your own motor, esc and servos its a pretty darn nice plane....versatile, rugged yet flies straight and floats nicely. Sure the newer version is now out (no flaps) but this older design is worth a look for a great bargain glider.

Recommendable

Now you can still choose this inexpensive model with the cumbersome wing assembly.
I think that since the successor model with the elegant wing assembly has been on sale for about a year, but is at a significantly more expensive price, this kit will soon no longer exist. There is nothing to improve the good flight characteristics. I think it is an ideal companion for the slope flight with poor landing conditions and can take a lot.

Slope soarer

The Glider is brilliant. The instructions , for a beginner, are note great.
There are somewhat conflicting views on the best set up.
Would have been better to buy complete system I think.

Happily impressed

Dec 19, 2019

I bought this for my 10 year old son to teach him to fly rc. I usually build and fly composite gliders, so I really impressed with the quality and build of this model. Some tricky parts for a 10 year old so easier for me to build it for him. Sometimes when I've built these types of foamies (in the past), I often thought to myself a certain stages of the build that "that's a dumb way to do that, or are you kidding that doesn't fit, or I could gave designed this better" HOWEVER with this model, I didn't think this even once

Great budget plane

Nov 16, 2019

The Phoenix 1600 is an overall good flyer for a person on a budget. I run an eflite park 480 1020 kv motor on a 4s 1800 lipo. Mostly I fly at the eco field at 7500’ above sea level. I take it out slop soaring in 30-40 mph winds with great results. It flies inverted, it will hover, loops, rolls with no problems. Easy to hand launch. It definitely is a fun durable plane to fly without breaking the bank. I would recommend this plane to anyone from beginner to expert pilots. Happy landings!!

Great plane.

Oct 14, 2019

I've bought a couple of these one set up with the motor and one without for use purely as a glider on a hill site. It's a cracking glider for the money and if you are learning like me then the plastic fuselage is tough to take some not so good landings. It glides very well and responds to the controls readily.
It has rudder, elevator. ailerons and flaps if you like.
On the negative side the motor is a bit flimsy, the shaft has come out several times in flight, but the propeller does fold back, again useful for landings. Plenty of room in the cockpit. I have also changed how the wings are held on so that I can use rubber bands. It required the placing of two dowels through the fuselage and strenghthening the wing roots to take the elastic bands, this change has saved my wings on those heavy hillside landings as I learn!
I fly it on a 2200mah 3S 35c battery and that lasts for flights of over 30 minutes (I've never actually run it down anywhere near) as I turn the power off most of the time to glide.
If you're learning or just want an inexpensive glider to have some fun with then I would recommend this glider.
