Don't crash, no spares from HK

Dec 26, 2017

Had a hard(ish) crash due ti signal disappearing for no known reason and the motor mounts busted. Found out that HK carries no spares and says its because the manufacturer does not supply them? then why sell the drone?
Mixed feeling about it when it flew, but now a complete waste of money and time.
Do not buy this drone untill they carry spares or you will be the same as me.
highly disappointed

Bought at discount, value good but not a good combination

Nov 20, 2017

Interesting this is my first time writing review in HobbyKing, even after over 10 plus orders during last year. I must say this is a controversial purchase. I bought this PNF at discount price, and it is truely dollar to dollar value. Considering the 4 motors, 4 ESCs, 1 camera, 1 VTX and 1 set of Naza lite plus a frame is absolutely out value compare to the price you paid individually. Qaulity-wise, when I revceived the product, you felt immediate that it has been in stock for quite some time, and I am ok with that because it doesn't hinder the function. My initial purchase to this quad was simply felt the value for money.
This is not my first quad though, I had built APM, Naze, SP3. But I never tried Naza so I thought this will be interesting too. But I must say that the performance of this quad is quite unpredicatable, maybe due to the fact that it is using Naza and a heavy quad. First, the power is not good, I tried 4S 8045 prop, 3S 1045 and 4S 1045, 4S will get motor a bit hot on 1045. but still you feel heavy, and no 'punch' feel, I mean in manaul mode. Secondly, the Naza in Manual mode seems to aid the yaw, I tried high Yaw gain over 170% to down to 80%, still when turn you get that a bit extra turn even after you release the yaw stick way before. I am pretty sure that the Naza is using the mangetometer to adjust yaw EVEN IN MANAUL mode unless mine is faulty. Although I cannot confirm that but if so that is crazy and cost me crashed my quad yesterday. When the quad is heavy and no 'punch' like power, unexpected yaw will leave you no room to save/correct the quad. By the way, I have upgraded the Naza lite to V2 too, and it doesn't help in that control perspective.
In GPS mode, you are ok to fly and hover, as long as not windy and turn (yaw slowly). But if you want to fly this FPV, you need to add the OSD since you wont know the battery level, speed etc. I extract the box GPS signal and linked to a micro Minmosd to add the OSD. However, because the signal line is so long from head camera to tail Vtx, even with separate power source, you will still see the motor noise (horizontal) on the screen. That I can't fix, maybe due to the venture is relatively long and the signal line in the quad acts like antenna picking up noise.
Another issue that you cannot set the Altitude gain too high, otherwise it will be very unstable in high wind situation, stay at 110% level. I had experienced that in GPS mode, it suddenly wobble and dropped over 20 m quickly and I had to switch to manual mode and made a softer landing.
One last thing, since I have destroyed one motor mount yesterday, and I found that there are no parts. I am considering to try 3D print, a person 'flyingman' has posted a motor mount 3D print file since 2015. That I might try, not sure if PLA will hard enough to sustain the tension required. I am a bit doubt with the weight and I am a bit worried that if it break in mid air, I might end up lose everything. If all not work, I might dismantle the component and move to a carbon fibre frame with Betaflight or iNav instead. And I will not use the Naza again.... But rest parts can be reused.
So interesting thing, is that, if you don't count the Naza lite set, you might be able to buy the rest with a carbon fibre frame at that price, but adding a F3 board and a GPS might be closed to the money you paying. However, that require more work.
For me, fiddling around all the tuning, trying something never tried and finally can reuse over 50% of component cost is a good value. So thats all my bits and pieces that I found out with this discount Qaud.

First time into quads, very pleased

Jun 19, 2017

I am NOT into FPV and have no Goggles, just intended to fly is as I would fly normally my other RC planes. Managed to finally get the setup right and managed a few minutes of hover and back to me.
I want to be able to record the flight video and play it after the flight, hope someone here can help me with what item I need to buy for that. Some on board video recorder, what?

Cheers

ISSUE 1 - The fact that there was no shipping paid on an international shipment made customs hold my package 3 extra days then just had the post office charge me $70 in import taxes.
ISSUE 2 - The amount of calibration for this thing right out of the box was a little excessive, and it still doesn't fly that well. I mean it "flies" but it sucks all the fun out of FPV when you don't trust it. It sinks when you turn and drifts like crazy. I'm used to my 260 which is insane in the air. This thing is slow and unstable, but I'm not giving up the fine tuning. I've spent hours trying to find solutions online but I'm starting to think mine might have FC problems.
ISSUE 3 - The props it comes with are too small. 9's help a lot, I'm getting some 10's next.
ISSUE 4 - Obviously the price. It's way too high for what you get. Make it RTF for the current price. Sure it looks cool, but its a tank in the air. No agility... I mean NONE. The perfect reviews must not know the joy of race class quads ;)

Holy crap what a value! I picked up this FatShark/Multistar equipped combo for $170, or half off. The included flight controller alone is worth that much! Factor in the normally expensive FatShark cam and VTx, MultiStar and Afro power setup, not to mention this great frame, and you wonder why you haven't already bought one!

I've been flying with the included 8" props, NanoTech 3S 3300mah 65C, in stock form. 10 minutes leaves 11.4V on the battery, or 3.8V per cell. Wow.

The frame and FC combination needs yaw gain added out of the box, to compensate for the added surface of the canopy compared to most quads of its size. Setting switch positions in the DJI GUI with my Taranis/D4R-II combination was maddening, involving end-point adjustments and curves, (Nerds: different modes are selected at different PW, in a weird bandwidth of the normal 1000-2000ms spectrum). But once that was done, (thank you YouTube), it was easy to get the thing up in the air.

Menacing. Holy crap. This thing looks mean in the air. I wish the bottom tray embraced the style of the canopy, though, because it's a boring piece of grey ABS, not flat black and edgy. The included power system has more than enough room for adding on, so far I've hoisted a Mobius gimbal with no issue, LEDs are next!
