Motor installation

Sep 14, 2018

Got the Turnigy 2836 Brushless Outrunner 1000kv motor in it. Runs a bit hot because of the tight space and no venting, so drilled small holes and added a scoup to suck in air. No difference in flight performance noticed. Pics added to upload section.

Venting for heat issues

Sep 14, 2018

As previous comments I made, parts were missing and being an avid builder, I build the parts required in CF and took time to carefully have a neat, well put together aircraft. First flight gave me a warning on the heat in the tight fuse and trimming the CG as this model is tail heavy and requires lots of lead in the front. CG now is at 73mm, which handles great. I added holes in the fuse and small scoup to force air in. I will tape a heat sensor to see the running temps in the fuse to compare before and after. Pics uploaded.

Beautiful aircraft, too many small parts missing. Not good if you are not a builder.

Russell 2000mm Glider

Jul 29, 2018

This model has some great features and more than a few drawbacks.
The plane looks amazing, and the construction finish is very good. The fitting supplied for connecting servos are great and the flight experience once airbourne is amazing.
However, , , , the model is supplied crazy tail heavy. I had to pour a lead block 150gb to fit just behind the in-runner motor I installed. Both the motor and lead slug then chewed up quite a bit of the fuse space. I had enough to fit a turnigy 2200Mah S3 25C battery, a 60Amp ESC with a 4 amp BEC. The receiver fits inside the channel where the wing spar passes through, and there isn't much space for anything else.
During my first glide test the wing locating pins loosened and I found I needed to either glue the wings to the fuse, or tape them together. For now they are taped, but I will probably glue them in place.
The spar size worries me, particularly since the dihedral means the spar diameter and length is limited. I am seriously concerned that sudden aerobatic moves are likely to break either the spar, or rip the D Box through the wing. Time will tell.
That said, I'm hoping the Russell will fly well as a sloper, and it should be able to cope with strong winds if it truly is a "hot liner" class model.
Fingers crossed. :-D

Great value, even greater when purchased during a HK sale!!!

Feb 21, 2017

I purchased two of these models back on Valentine's day when HK had them for $128.00 each! What a value!!! Shipping for the two planes has fedex ground for just $12.00. Total costs of each plane to my front porch was $134.00. I did read the review on rcgroups and the posts about the horizontal stab crank fouling with the inside of the fuse; well I can report that both of my Russell's had a smooth action with no sticking or binding.

The finish is excellent and the only issue I have is the slop in the horizontal stab (it doesn't stay 90 degrees square with the rudder, but I can fix that or not.. I read on rcgroup that people have replaced the stab spar with carbon fiber rod, and I will do the same.).

Getting the ailerons to crow full up to crow the plane for landings will take a rework. I think having one as EP powered and then one for slope/thermal is the way to go. Just use a model rocket plastic or blase nose cone (one that fits the diameter and profile) as a nose for the plane if you don't go with electric power. I have seen so many people just slap on some crap for a nose cone and it make the plane look terrible.

You will have to get an in-line geared motor to make this plane zoom and there is a right up on rcgroups about the setup.

All in all, $134.00 U.S. delivered to my front door is an awesome price! This is why I have shopped with Hobby King for over 10 years now and continuing! Great savings to we the modelers who are struggling against the world's elites!

Nice plane - but not a hotliner

Nov 23, 2016

The Russell comes well packed and perfect looking. The rods for elevator and rudder are preinstalled but the plastic clewis should be changed into metal clewis.
Mine is build up as a glider so I can not say anything about the motor...
There is no need of thin wing servos - 'normal' 12g digital metal geared servos are perfect. The tail is weak and was reinforced with glas fiber after the first flights because it broke open.
The plane also is no hotliner but can be flown faster. Because of the used airfoil it is perfect for gliding at the slope or in thermals. The CG for the first flights is at 85mm from the leading edge of the wind for a safe maiden. The total weight is about 1,5kg so that's normal for planes with that wingspan.
Overal it's a nice plane and worth what you pay for it. Some things can be reinforced or changed by your own choice but the plane itself is flying nice.

Cheers - Tom

Nach Reparatur

Nov 17, 2016
