This balsa/ply ARF is impressive, but definitely NOT for the rank beginner. Building it involves servo installs, and tricky control horn installs, not to mention mounting the power plant. I chose fuel. An electric installation would probably be easier. I wanted to use an NGH 17cc gasser bought from HK but I had to abandon that because of the lack of an available muffler extender, without which the nose gear mount interferes, and switch to a 60size glow motor who's muffler stands well off the motor. This will work, but will require a good amount of cowl trimming, which is a shame. Note also that while the tail and wing servos are fairly standard in their mounting, the nose steering is a separate servo and not covered very well in the online downloadable manual, and neither is the throttle servo if you are using a fuel motor.
This model is still under construction on my table. I am not a fast builder and the motor kerfuffle threw me at least a 2 week delay as I considered my options and tried to source a part for the muffler. However, I am pleased with the overall construction of the kit and am looking forward to getting it in the air.

An excellent flier

I had this plane in my sight for over a year, but not fully convinced to buy it for two main reasons: The camouflage finish, and lack of spares. I ended up buying it because Tower Hobbies decided to stop selling the Pilatus PC-21 57in. I do not regret my purchase. The plane is an excellent flier, although I made a little change on it. I replaced the tanks with regular wintips, fitted it with a Prodrive V2 50-50 motor, 15x8 propeller and 6S battery, and its a real winer. Two things missing to make the plane perfect: the canopy instrument panel has to be trimmed out to fit even 6S 4000mA batteries, and the nose gear shaft wobbles a bit too much in the retract hub. Both things can be fixed, but the second one is a bit of a pain. I may be painting the models to more visible colors in the short future.
Overall, I strongly recommend this plane. Is the best in its size and at a reasonable price available in the US.
I hope HobbyKing will bring it back to stock.

This airplane looks fantastic in the air and is very impressive. The electric conversion with 6s 4000 MAH battery weighs 10 lbs. So, it's a heavy wing loading airplane and likes to land fast. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the landing gear pins are too soft for the weight and they bend on a less than perfect landing.
I do love the way it flies. Set it up as in the manual and you will love it too.

These VQ RC ARF's are top notch planes Hobbyking should have a better selection of these balsa and plywood ARF's....the foamies are just cheap planes....I build 30cc and 60cc Phoenix Models, and such brands....HobbyKing has to step it up....with a better selection of RC ARF big name brands.
