On the final restart in overtime of Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400, Johnson, driving the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS, surged past the race leader and held off a hard-charging championship contender to post his first win at the track and capture his record-tying seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, joining two members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s inaugural class as the only drivers with seven titles in NASCAR’s premier series. It took Johnson only 11 seasons to earn his #Se7en titles, eclipsing the 14 and 15 seasons it took the other two seven-time champions. Although Johnson made it look easy, he had his work cut out for him all day. Despite qualifying 14th, he started the race from the back of the field for unapproved body modifications. He made short work of the competition, racing to the front pack shortly after the green flag waved. He didn’t find the front of the field until the final restart where he led the rest of the way for his fifth win of 2016 and 80th overall.
