Guide To Starting an RC Gas Engine

Guide To Starting an RC Gas Engine

One of the many great aspects of this hobby is its diversity, not just simply the diverse range of model types and subjects out there, but the diverse ways in which you can power them. Whatever system you choose, however, it needs to be reliable and of course, electric-powered models win that hands down, but when choosing a "wet' system" (uses fuel) you'll want something that you can trust to run and start well and reliably and not need constant tuning and adjusting and this is where the Turnigy TP range of gas Engines is making waves, especially in how easy they are to start right out the box, a sign of a good engine.

We've all mostly experienced either directly down at the club or indirectly through friends or social media the pains, pitfalls, and tribulations of owning and running an RC gas engine, but equality we'd have seen many fliers having great success and enjoying engines that show no sign of misbehaving. So what is the secret to this, well, it's many factors and considerations, and covering these possibilities is not within the scope of this blog post. However a good running and reliable engine, like most things, start at the beginning, and I really mean "starts". If you have an engine that starts easily and from the very moment you open the box and first mount it to run it, then it's a sure sign of an engine that will give you stress-free running for years to come, and happily, the Turnigy TP range of gas engines display all these signs and with just a little preparation before your first run, you'll be rewarded with an engine that starts first time every time BY HAND. So let's get a little more into it.

Now why stress "BY HAND", well historically and typically the majority of gas engines (especially when new and not yet run in) require the turning force/speed of a starter motor to get all the parts moving with enough energy to pull fuel through and start the combustion process (assuming the carb is set up correctly at the factory, which you'll find it is with the TP range), but in knowing how to help that process along can get your new engine running on the first go, and if done right, purely by hand too. As with all engines you'll need to prime it, get fuel into the carb, and combustion chamber ready so the cylinder can push the fuel up to the spark plug when the crankshaft is turned over and ignite the fuel this starts the combustion. However, with a brand-new engine, the carbs diaphragms (valves of such that regulate and control fuel flow into the engine) may not work well until they too are primed. On a brand new engine priming alone will likely not get these diaphragms 'wet' so you'll need to remove the carb plates to soak them with fuel, fortunately, this is a straight forward process (all explained and detailed in the video below). With the carb now also 'primed' the engine gets the suction it really needs to properly draw fuel into the engine, other than that it's just a case of fully priming the engine as normal. That being said, this is not a universal fix for all gas engines and this is where the Turnigy TP range really stands out above others in the low to mid-range priced gas engines on the market today. Whilst a good tip in general, soaking the diaphragms does work for all brands, often much tweaking of the carb needles and use of a starter motor is required which can be a very long-winded and frustrating process. With Turnigys TP range you have an engine that is set up at the factory to run and start right out of the box giving confidence from the very first start.

So if you are looking to get your first gas engine and want to avoid the stress and frustration that can come from running in a gas engine, or you are an experienced gas user looking for an engine you know you can rely on and yet at a price that won't break the bank, the Turnigy TP range of gas engines should be your next consideration and in case you are still not convinced, check out the video below.
