Superb entry into hobby grade quads.

Sep 02, 2017

My first proper quadcopter after a few years of flying helis, the Super-X brushless is an excellent first hobby grade quad. Currently supplied with a MWC 32-X flight controller (NaZe32 ACRO clone) it has no GPS/MAG/BARO installed, but can be retrofitted.
No assembly instructions, and differs from videos in using modular arm screws to mount the FC instead of the brass standoffs, but assembly is pretty straightforward once you lay out parts. You'll have leftover motor screws and four extra nylock nuts.
Bound easily to a DX6i radio.
My only previous quad is a CX10 (currently down for repair after my dog caught it) and after a crash course in MultiWii and reading the various "DX6i Super-X won't arm" threads got it airborne with throttle travel set to +125%-125%.
Don't know what firmware it came with but my first flights were on Baseflight, then flashed Cleanflight 3.2.1 for a while but lack of experience left me with PID tuning issues. Eventually flashed latest Betaflight 3 and the default PIDs worked pretty well, and I finally discovered how surprisingly aggressive this thing can be. I'm still tuning parameters as I learn to fly a quad with some newbie issues in Horizon mode, but ACRO mode is smooth and surprisingly like flying a collective pitch heli.
3020 props supplied are ABS and unbalanced, but maybe 5 minutes of shaving plastic off the topside has a prop nearly perfectly balanced.
One motor had no brass washer under the circlip, and all motors had too much slop, but the motor shafts are very hard and its easy to remove almost all slop (instead of adding washers) by gripping the shaft in pliers and rotating the motor bell. Balancing blades and minimising runout on motor spindles reduced noise and vibrations immensely, and improves control authority.
The supplied 300 mAh batteries give me 7 minutes of newbie-aggressive outdoor flight and come down somewhat warm. Set my timer to 6 minutes, and land soon after it goes off with no change in hover throttle position, but some decrease in punchout power in the last minute or so.
A 750 mAh Turnigy graphene gives me 13 minutes. Could be I'm too new at this to tell, but the heavier battery doesn't seem to reduce agility at all, and throttle hover position is the same as the 300 mAh, despite increase in weight. I'm curious about how big a battery this could carry.
Buy spare props. The supplied ABS props have lasted surprisingly well, and in ~40 flights I've trashed 4 of them. Fingers crossed I make it through the weekend without breaking another before the spares I ordered later arrive on Tuesday.
This quad is surprisingly tough for someone who's come from flying microhelis. Also, even with the most aggressive flying my current skill level allows and the heavier 750 mAh battery, the tiny little 1103 motors come down cold to the touch. Running a full pack at full throttle while tethered to the test bench still results in cold motors. I'm going to try larger and smaller props and see if this changes, but the motors seem to be able to handle 1S with indifference, and I suspect they'd handle 2S perfectly well with bigger ESCs and the FC modded for 2S.
This is a perfect introduction to brushless quads for someone prepared to muck about with the firmware and programming. Unfortunately I didn't fly the stock firmware, but with the latest Betaflight 3 for NaZe32 this is a spectacular introduction to multirotors.

Delivery was two days from HongKong VERRY IMPRESSIVE!!!!!
Ok the quality was great everything was nicely soldered and everything works. I gave 4 crowns for value and overall because the description says " it is a full featured micro sized MWC. It not only has the normal 6050MPU, but also has a compass and barometer " Which it does not have, or my board has a faulty Barometer and Mag (compass).
I think that they are NOT there, why? Because if you go on Oversky's web site they have two boards and this one looks exactly the one I got and the other is called MX NANO OVERSKY 32 type X Pro flight control board for Super-X" and it HAS the BARO and MAG.
Hobbyking please tell me I am wrong and If I am not please fix the description. Also if my board does have those then send me something that details how to get them going.
Otherwise I like it and it flys well. I built it using the RCGroups thread here > http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2129243

This unit is definitively not for a beginner !!! Once it is adjusted and tuned it fly like a little devil and is safe due to it,s lightness. But you will have to read a lot and be prepared to some thinking. It is controlled by a Multi Wii controller and you will have to use a software named Baseflight from Google apps. I had a lot of problem just to get the motor armed. You will have to flash the software from this apps with one identified with a date earlier and you will be able to program the auxiliary channel to arm the motor. I will add some files so it will be easier for anybody to make it fly. I admit i know much more about Multi Wii now !!!

Can't describe how happy I am with my Super-X. While no soldering is required, you're going to need some common sense and precision screwdrivers to assemble and get it flying. It comes with NO instructions, and the YouTube video I found on assembly is obsolete. All the holes lined up perfectly, everything worked right. The flight controller is now the MX MiniWii 32 with Cleanflight flashed on it. It has a mini-USB port on the board, so needs no usb stick. You'll need a computer with Chrome, and the Cleanflight add-on installed to test and configure the flight controller. You'll need a DSM2 protocol transmitter, I used my Walkera Devo 10 with Deviation firmware. It comes without a battery charger, so pick up a little USB charger and some extra batteries here. It took an hour to assemble, and several hours to configure, learning everything from scratch. I kept lots of notes as I hopped from site to site picking up what I needed from different wikis, blogs, and videos. I don't know if she will fly the range seen in the video seen here, but she is very stable and not toy-like at all. After a couple of crashes there has been no damage. I've read complaints about how expensive it is, but I paid about the same for my Nano QX3d, which is clearly a toy. Hobby King had it in my hands from China in three days. Most impressive.

This thing is very small, looks simple to put together, but it would've been nice to see a manual to differentiate CW and CCW motors. I have smaller nano quadcopters, there RTF Nanos and thay are very basic and take the fun of building a quad and seeing your work take off. This is nice small enough to fly indoors and fast enough to fly outdoors.

You will need some larger ESCs as the mx-3a will burn out as soon as you upgrade multiwii. I think it's a problem with the magnetometer being backwards oriented too, though there is a fix for this on RCGroups.com. This would be a great little quadcopter if it had better ESCs and would then be 5 crowns, very quiet and stable, but as it is I can only give 3.

Overall a nice micro-sized quad. I would recommend it to those who are looking for a hobby-grade stuff in micro size, are familiar with MultiWii platform and like to play with settings. For those who just want a nice flying toy, there are much cheaper alternatives around.

Pros: Full programmability, modularity, brushless power, baro sensor and magnetometer onboard, most of the time takes crashes without damage because of the size.

Cons: Expensive, in order to unleash full potential you need to be familiar with MWii platform, no voltage sensor, lack of proper documentation (board manual, pins layout etc), fragile motor shafts.

I bought two kits, one for FPV, another for aerobatic flying (and source of spare parts should something go wrong with the first one). For FPV, 1gram camera 1.5g wide angle lens 2.5g 200mw TX (all from fpvhobby) and small power filter makes a nice setup, adding only 5-6 grams to the total weight. With 750mah 1S nanotech from hobbyking expect about 7-8 minutes of flight time. The video range is decent at about 200 m with stock quarter-wave TX antenna and IBCrazy's 3-turn helical at the receiving end. This is quite a distance if you put in perspective the size of the thing and the fact that you can easily lose VLOS at 20 m from your position. No doubt it can be further improved with a clover-leaf antenna on TX.
