Smoke hole

Nov 04, 2016

I personally don't have this muffler, so I can't comment on the quality, but what I can mention about it is that the hole for the smoke nipple isn't for smoke, what it's for is a mounting bracket to support the muffler itself to prevent breaking.

I have had two of these. Both broke after about 30 flights. Had the same experience with JTEC pitts muffler too. I give up. Will have to go with a canister. DLE55 on Extra260. Shame as they are cheap and look nicely made.

Fitted OK to DLE55. Sounds nice. But it fractured and failed after about 20 flights.
I wont judge it yet though. I found the HT lead had been touching the muffler and this can cause failure. So in fact possibly a better record than two Jtec mufflers that have failed similarly but for no apparent reason whatsoever. I know they can fail if they touch anything at all, like the cowl.

Very nice and cheap Pitts muffler. I installed it on the RCG50 in my 50cc HK SBach without issues. I didn't bother to use the stock smoke oil nipple hole, though.. It's located to far from exhaust port. I plan on making another nipple hole closer to the exhaust port during the winter. I only gave it 4 "quality-stars" because of the useless nipple hole.

great build,is baffled and the finish is excellent, mating surface is a little rough but with gasket there is no leak so don't let the other reviews scare you.you should always have a gasket of some fashion for the exhaust

Sandyjan-
A lot of folks use baby oil. The main ingredient in baby oil is mineral oil. Look at the pharmacy for mineral oil. It is much cheaper per oz. that baby oil without the heavy perfume smell. I cut the mineral oil with kerosene to thin it a bit. Some use diesel but kerosene again has less odor than diesel. 70 percent mineral oil to 30 percent kerosene seems to work best for me.

Hooked up the Sullivan Skywriter today70 mineral oil and pcnt30 kerosene. Had great success with this mixture in a previous homemade muffler.
Well forget this thing being advertised as a smoke muffler! Puked all the oil straight on the ground. Tried to speed up the pump, slow it down.......it doesn't work! Nice finish and provides an ok sound. Does fit the DM-55

It's pretty nice. However the contact surface (where the muffler contacts the cylinder head ) is pretty rough. You could grind it smooth yourself or use a gasket. This should really be done in manufacturing.

It looks great and fits the DM engines perfectly.

I'm not sure about the placement of the so-called "smoke" opening. IMHO it is too far from the cylinder head.

The muffler looks like it was cast then grinded smooth and polished.

If the roughness of the contact surface was fixed it would be a five stars.
