Foam model aircraft are great if you want to get flying quickly, but after a while tends to all fly and assemble the same way, and it could be said lack a certain sense of achievement. So why not experience the thrill and satisfaction of building your very own model from a kit of parts, covering it in your own unique color scheme, and watching it fly successfully for the very first time.

H-King has made this much easier for you with their range of laser cut kits. For ease of construction, all the wooden parts are beautifully laser cut so you can build the perfect model. The laser cutting is so accurate that the parts fit very snugly together allowing them to hold in place whilst you run a good CA glue around the joints.

The subject of this kit is the popular American light aircraft the Piper J-3 Cub. The Piper aircraft company built the Cub in large numbers and it became a firm favorite due to its simplicity, ruggedness, affordability, and great flying characteristics. The large wing enabled it to fly very slowly and its benign handling made it an excellent trainer. There are many examples still flying today and they were also used in every theater of war during WW2 with a distinguished career as an air ambulance and observer or spotter plane, one of these was the last aircraft in air combat over Europe. So when construction is complete you can finish your model in a variety of color schemes whether it be military or civil, the classic Piper Cub yellow of course being a popular choice.

This kit is an updated version of the original H-King Piper Cub. The improvements over the original version are; streamlined wing struts, improved undercarriage assembly, improved pushrod system, 3 layer tailplane construction for added strength, fiberglass firewall, tail-mounted servos for I.C. version, improved battery/fuel tank access, and added scale detail. This model captures the very essence of the Piper Cub with its solid yet lightweight framework structure as per the full-size aircraft but is built from balsa and hardwoods and includes a molded plastic cowl and windscreen. Also supplied are a pair of scale aircraft wheels, carbon tube wing spars, and joiners plus a comprehensive hardware pack that includes nuts, bolts, control horns, rods, and connectors, etc.

The Piper J-3 Cub has been designed to use either a 35~42 millimeters brushless outrunner motor with 500~600 watts of power or an equivalent gas/nitro engine. No flaps are fitted to the full size or the model so all you require is a 4 channel radio with 4/5 servos, all this keeps it nice and simple.

Overall this is a fantastic kit and due to its ease of construction, it is perfect for the seasoned builder or those with limited building experience. Once finished in an authentic color scheme and with the addition of scale accessories such as a pilot and instrument panel this scale looking Piper Cub will look the part and turn heads when performing lazy aerobatics or low, slow passes at your local flying field.

Great Flying Cub

Oct 27, 2022

The build wasn't too complicated. Just pay attention to the instruction pictures. You don't get a true manual, but just a book of pictures. My only real complaint is the kit does not provide a way to properly secure your wings to the fuselage. I didn't realize it until I closed the wing up. I improvised and used hooks and rubber bands. Blind nuts would be the way to go.
Flying this plane is an absolute joy. It doesn't seem to have any bad tendencies. Here is what my setup is:
Badass 3520-790KV Motor
Badass Rebel 65 Amp ESC
APC - 12x6 prop
Ovonic 4S 3400 Lipo
Spektrum AR631 Receiver
I have the maiden flight on Youtube if you want to see how it flies.

Great kit

Feb 26, 2022

Some of the parts are left over because there was no explanation to where they go. But they aren't an integral part so no big deal. I would add a wood leading edge to sand round to make it easier to have a leading edge. The little screws to hold the windows on weren't long enough to go through the airframe to hold the windows on so I had to put the windows on on the outside instead of the inside. Other than that this kit is a very nice kit. Especially for the price point.
My only suggestion would be to make the window screws about a 1/16th inch longer to hold the windows. Also for the main wheels to add a washer or spacer on the inside of the wheel due to if you tighten the nuts it'll pinch the wheel and keep it from freely spinning resulting in nose overs on landing and take off. I haven't flown it yet but will here shortly.
All in all besides what I suggested this kit is a very nice kit and would totally recommend it to anyone.

Good Value Overall

All in all, not a bad kit at all. The quality of the laser cutting is very good indeed although some of the design needs improvement; especially with regard to the undercarriage and wing struts. The instruction manual is not good at all and I would not recommend this kit to anyone who does not have prior kit building experience. The kit went together well enough but only because I was able to anticipate certain construction steps and considerations. The very un-scale like cowling is another area that requires attention - the ridiculous airflow cut out makes it look like a computer generated 'smilie'.
I cannot understand why these manufacturers struggle so much with providing understandable, well written manuals!

Very Good Value

Oct 30, 2021

I have just received my V2 kit via DHL - ordered 24/10 and received today 29/10 which I think is good going by HK/DHL (Hong Kong to the UK), under the present circumstances. Kit arrived well packaged and undamaged(and most importantly, well labelled 'Fragile - Do Not Accept Delivery If Damaged') . After a cursory examination of the contents and the laser cut parts, I am very impressed by the quality which seems to represent very good value for money. Looking forward to the build and certain modifications to the design, that I have in mind.

Exceptional kit from HK

Oct 28, 2021

I am currently building the V2 kit. Judging by online reviews and build videos of the original version I cam say that there appears to have been a number of tweaks and improvements to the latest version. Including a more scale like door, all be it half the scale length due to structural restrictions, and decent wing servo ply mounts are now provided for a more conventional servo instillation, i.e. laying on the side with just the horn protruding through the mount plate. I'm finding it a fairly simple straight forward build, and have completed most of the structural work within two weeks. That said, it is still not a model for a first time builder, the instructions are more guide notes, and assume you have some plan building experience in hand already. I consider myself a reasonably experienced plan builder, but I too have been caught out coming across the odd part not mentioned anywhere in the photo illustrations whilst searching through the bits for something else! If you are expecting a 'Glue part A to part B' sort of instruction book, then this is definitely not that. The pictures are fairly adequate to see most of the parts, but you will need to be capable of deciding on a build sequence yourself. I only mention all this because I have seen several reviews complaining of woefully inadequate instructions. But if you are confident you can build from a wing plan and a set of photos, then this kit is truly amazing value for money! The laser cutting is nothing short of remarkable! Every part fits perfectly. They have even laser cut hinge slots in to the wing trailing edge for you! I have had to do very little fettling at all so far, other than cleaning the charcoal of the edges of the parts, which is a given with any laser cut parts anyway. I really am blown away by the quality of this kit, and it really is a complete kit too, even if you may wish to change some of the hardware supplied for some items of personal choice. I really can't speak highly enough of what you get here for your money. I can't wait for the Eindecker to come back in stock so I can give that laser cut kit a bash too! Full 5 stars from me!

Excellent kit however I gave up on the 100+ tiny screws for the windows on the top surface and resorted to covering the windows over, I also found it impossible to get the side windows to lay flat ended up fitting them to the outer surface of the plane.

Not at all impressed with this Kit!

Jul 30, 2021

I have been building and flying model aircraft since I was 11 years old. I am now 68 years old and I like to think, rather well versed in the hobby. I have built and flown most types of aircraft. For the past two or three years I have been very seriously into helicopters and drones of all sizes.
I have recently seen on the market a very good looking MIG 29. The kit is by Freewing (I think). It is powered by 2 x Gas Turbine Jets. I have never flown jet turbine models and felt that as I needed to get back into flying fixed wing aircraft. The J3 Cub would be a good way to begin fixed wing flying again.
I do know that the Cub has good all round characteristics, for both slow flight building up to a faster speed. I could then progress on to an electric powered trainer jet then the MIG 29. I really feel that this is the right way to proceed and therefore purchased your Piper J3 Cub.
You will of course know that I have purchased many aircraft from Hobbyking.com and up until this latest purchase I have been very happy with the quality. This J3 Cub however, is the really bottom end when you talk about quality. I do not think I will be purchasing any further kits from you if this is the standard to which they have dropped. The money I have spent putting things right is unbelievable. I am really sorry that it has come to this, but I am not happy.
