FrSky has taken the TARANIS X9D Plus to a new level with the release of the Special Edition. The transmitter comes with a new wrap to create an exciting carbon fiber look. There have also been huge improvements and the transmitter now comes with M9 Hall Sensor gimbals and customized M4 CNC aluminum gimbal stick ends which are combined with upgraded switches to provide a superior feel to controlling your models. The Special Edition a detachable SMA antenna so you can use your antenna of choice.

As well as these changes the Special Edition keeps all the well-known features of the standard TARANIS X9D Plus such as their frequency hopping ACCST technology, that takes advantage of the entire 2.4GHz band, resulting in excellent range and reliability. It also keeps the high quality, better contrast LCD display that is adjustable from blue to white, and the built in haptic vibration feedback. This means you can be alerted silently or use the existing built in voice or alarm features.

The TARANIS utilizes Voice Alerts from an internal speaker, versus just an annoying beeper. For things like; audible Count down timers, low voltage warnings, landing gear down warnings etc., Just about anything can be programmed, you can even use your own voice. The SD card slot offers unlimited memory options and a USB port for upgrades even a headphone jack.

The TARANIS mixes the power of the “OPEN TX” open-source software with an unbelievable ergonomic case with 8 programmable switches, two twist knobs and two easy to get to lateral 'slider' pots.

One of the best features of the TARANIS is its full telemetry capability, as well as RSSI signal strength feedback, there are 3 different programmable failsafe modes and receiver lock, so no more crashes due to selecting the wrong model. If you have stock in other brand receivers or B&F’s, no worries the TARANIS has a JR style RF module slot, so you have the option of other brand modules such as the Orange DSM2/DSMX compatible or Open LRS 433mhz module, or pop in another Frsky module to expand the transmitters capabilities even more with dual RF.

When you put it all together the TARANIS X9D Plus Special Edition is the transmitter of choice.

A whole new world!

Dec 16, 2018

My radio before this was a 20 year old Futaba FF6 wich has never let me down, but seeing all the new functions and the freedom, of not having to check what frequencies are free/used, of the 2.4GHz systems made me take the step to the Taranis. And no, it is actually not a very new radio but has been proven and upgraded to this "plus special edition". But since the different versions has been around for a while there's millions of helpful tips and tricks on the web and you have spare parts and upgrades available from multiple sources. It's a big and beefy radio but I don't have a problem with that. You have too many options when setting up this radio - I will never use even 10% of the functions, but they are there if you need them. For me, beeing able to choose exactly in what order the channels are used is really nice! And then we have telemetry which is a thing all by itself... Since so much of this radio is software dependant there is the thing with updating firmware and such, but everything has worked for me, and when it has not it has been my fault so... I would say the quality doesn't look or feel as good as my old Futaba (except the gimbals which are exellent!) but you get a lot for your money!

Awesome!

Aug 17, 2017

I did some RC glider 10+ years back with a simple 4 Channel Futaba.
And 2 weeks ago, I have decided to look into Quads, and this is my very first 16 Channel radio. I received this yesterday 16th August, order was placed 8th August, one thing I noticed was that HobbyKing would generate shipping label once your order have been accepted, but they consolidate their shipments, so you will notice for almost 5 to 6 days where the status will be stuck at waiting for UPS pick up and what not, but I guess that is how they keep their freight cost low.
Anyways, on to the radio, so far so good, I made a boo boo of ordering the EU version because I wanted the EU plug but no worries mate. Downloaded OpenTX Companion 2.2 upgrade the OpenTX OS, downloaded the firmware for the X9D, flash that via the 3 finger salute, yes yes I am picking up all these jargon and I am just 2 weeks into this hobby and have not flew anything except so far, 1.5 hours on my E010 from Eachine lol..... After that I flashed the non-EU XJT firmware and we are all good, ready to bind to my non-EU FrSky X4R-SB once my quad arrives.
So far I have used the X9D with the LiftOff FPV simulator on my PC, spent around 2 hours, loving it, this thing is a beast, heavy, but I am sure I will get use to it soon enough. Best value for money and a radio that was develop around the Quad community. Love the Carbon Fibre finishing.
