Here is your Winner for June:

Matthew Tickel with his Aeroworks Extra 260

1) Where are you from and what's the story behind the crash?

I am from Sumter, South Carolina, and have been flying RC anything for about 15 years. This was near the beginning of my journey and still learning how to build, setup, and fly - so the setup was a big part of the crash but also not being thorough and checking the battery voltage!

The battery was near its end and needed to be recharged. So when I went up for the last flight the plane would see, about a minute into the flight the voltage got low enough to lock the servos up into neutral setting but I never set them to the desired positions! Throttle servo full power, wings, and rudder were centered but the elevator was slightly up. So after several full power loops, the plane met its demise as a lawn dart and turned into a balsa woodpile!

2) What is your favorite RC model and why?

After flying planes and helicopters for years, I was introduced to FPV drones. Years of building and racing them, I believe that would have to be my favorite because it took me to be a champion with Multigp 2 years in a row and also allowed me to travel and see new places.

These are not the 5" race drones, by the way, these are the mega drones swinging 13" props!

3) What is the best part of being an RC pilot and why?

Being an RC pilot has dramatically expanded my knowledge of electronics and building I have been able to take my knowledge and help new and seasoned pilots with learning new concepts and solving problems.

Looking back on the beginning of my RC venture, being young and how it was all new to me, and feeling the excitement of flying something I just built myself and now, being older and the vast knowledge I have learned from the RC world and shared to fellow pilots. I would say the best part of being an RC pilot is the comradery and good times spent in the community.
