Spectacular maiden run - 5 stars

Nov 02, 2017

just a follow up on this hull. Prior its maiden run I fitted a TFL SSS 3674 2070kv motor and 120 amp Turnigy ESC from Hobbyking. I also upgraded the water cooling to dual pickup for better cooling of both the motor and ESC. I replaced the propellor with a 440 balanced and polished version in bronze. The maiden run was spectacular.on 4s. I need to upgrade the stock 4 mm flex as it simply is not up to the torque of the bigger motor. The shaft failed after one ten minute run. I will replace with a 3/16" strut and flexshaft, running without a teflon liner. I had expected that a shaft upgrade would be needed and the failed shaft is not a criticism of the HK item.

Very well built and finished

Oct 25, 2017

Very well built and finished. An attractive fun model. I have swapped out the stock motor for an SSS 3674 2075kv to run a slightly larger diameter propellor. I also replaced the stock rudder for a dual pickup blade and dual outlet and ran larger diameter tubing to cool the motor and ESC separately. I used a Hobbyking T120 version 3 ESC. Programming the ESC was very easy with the optional programming box as the ESC has a programming plug connection. I was not enthused about the two piece shaft and will replace with a one piece flexshaft for ease of maintenance. Five stars for value and quality.

Outstanding workmanship and well worth the investment. Be sure to add epoxy to the bolt-on fin.....the 2 retaining screws are not enough to keep you from losing it. A joy to build and own.

I just received this hull and my first impressions have all been very positive. This is a fiberglass hull that comes pre-painted and with all the decals shown applied and clear-coated. For the price, this is an amazing hull considering the water cooler brushless motor comes with and is installed and that the hull includes all the running hardware and a metal propeller.

There are some area where improvements can be made. The instructions are a cheap photocopy and I am disappointed. The stand uses very light plywood and the assembly instructions are poor and the fit is not great.

I would also like to see factory installed reinforcement plywood added inside the hull where the turn fin attaches. This is something I will have to fix myself.

The rear vertical fin is cheap and the colour does not match the hull. The two bolts used to secure it are so small they are almost useless. I recommend you use some good epoxy if you want to keep the fin attached to the boat.

All in all, for the price it is still a decent value and as I have always wanted an old school shovel nose hydro, this was the quickest way for me to get on the water. With a few product enhancements, this could be a deluxe kit.

Very good product, hull is fiberglass really well done, bright colors and in general all materials used in this model are really high quality!

Stock engine and prop have good performances with 4S lipo 4500 40C (HK Zippy), boat is very fast and stable.

Using supplied alloy turn fin you can turn right at maximum speed with no problems... left turns of course are possible only at reduced speed.

I use Turnigy 120A Aquastar ESC and it fit very well with motor in terms of performance.

After 10 minutes runs both motor ESC lipos are quite cold.

Very reccomended!!!!

Really beautiful boat. I bought a Hobby King 120 amp boat ESC 4A and install for the ruder a Futaba standard servo 3kg. My battery is a Nano-Tech 3s 6 000 mAh 25 c. IMHO it is not necessary to go in 4 s with this beauty instead you absolutely want to break the thin fin...

This racing hydroplane is very good value for money. On 4s with the Turnigy 120A speedo, its very fast and entrtaining on the water, its also challenging in the tiurns too, a real 'pocket rocket', excellent value. Dont think there are any other retro 50's sytle shovelnose racing hydroplane's that are ARTR on the market at the moment, this is one of the best iv'e tested in a long time. Only slight downside is that the left hand turns on the water are very wide indeed , this isn't a fault its part of a hydroplane's design, they prefer to go fast in a straight line and they prefer right hand ovals on the lake if your'e racing, then its no problem, but just loads of fun and it looks terrific on the lake....Just make sure you seal the hatch on well before racing....

First run on a local lake went really well, excellent straight line speed using Lipo 4c 5000 mAh battery with 200amp marine speed controller (from Aust warehouse).

I did achieved some speed turns but still learning, until I tried to turn on a lip of a wave when the wind pick up and I flipped the boat (I waited over 10 minutes for til to be blow to edge of the lake).

With the top taped only a few drop of water managed to get in, while it was upside down.

I plan to build a rescue boat to retrieve this great model.

This boat has to be one of the best I have btought off HK. Love the detail of it. Came packed perfectly and running on a 4s 4000 mah it gets up and goes. Will try a 5000 mah and see how she performs. Only thing i will say is to unscrew the fin on top and glue it down won't hold on if you flip. Thanks HK for an awesme product!!!!

Update: The boat was a little bit nervous in turn, so I upgraded the turnfin to Proboat 1/12 hydro turnfin and it turns perfect at full speed :-)
9$ on ebay, worth every $... I like this boat more and more, beautiful finish, god motor (low temps 30-40 C) on 4s. 80kmt with octura X440/3.
