Here's another of our superb Laser Cut Balsa Kits for the traditional R/C hobbyist and builder who enjoys constructing models from kit form.
The Sunbird is an all built up 1600mm, 4 channel, electric powered glider - with a little 'old timer' flavour mixed in!
the Kit features sharp accurate laser cut parts that simply slot together with little fuss and the wing looks fantastic when covered with transparent covering to show of the construction and your handywork.
The power system can be a simple small outrunner and 2s battery, using micro servos to keep her nice and light.
The resulting model is a great little park fly electric glider that performs well and has aileron/elevator/rudder/motor control. The Sunbird is tough enough to handle the odd 'oops!' moment from novice flyers and compact enough to be transported easily.
4 Channel radio system and 4 x micro servos
1550kv 15amp Outrunner
2 or 3s 1300mah Lipo battery
Propeller (8 x 4)
Basic hobby tools (knife, sand paper etc)
Build manual is listed under the 'Files' tab below
There are a few errors in the wing design. I managed to work around. May be a challenge for a novice though. The instructions are the bare minimum. Not a single front view to show the dihedral. The web balsa sheet is cut the wrong way, fibres along. No big deal though as the wings seem stable. Haven't tested a bungee start though.
It does help to print the drawing in the file section. Use poster print on several sheets and stick them together. Cover with clear foil when working. A bit tricky to get the mirrored print for the left wing.
Once you managed all the building you'll be rewarded with a very well flying light glider. Mine (no motor) weighs 420g and thermals well.
Not perfect but good value for the price. This is a bird of time copy
You will need traditional modeling skills to build this model! Great stuff!ik wil deze eens bouwen heb vroeger stick gebouwd van hk en vlieg goedI was very surprised/pleased with the quality of the wood and the laser cutting. The package arrived fast with included instructions. The instructions could be a bit better but with prior building experience, it should not be a problem. This has excited me because I'm relatively new to electrics and love them but I have to admit that I don't care for the foam stuff. This provides thebest of both worlds in a neatly packaged box.
I hope to see more kits offered in the future and start collecting them. This glider is very easy to build. The instructions are good. I covered this with HK transparent red foil.
It really does fly great. Really stable.Simple and flys well. The kit is easy to assemble if you use the full size plans available under the files tab. In the kit that I received, the stock where the ailerons connects is the wrong size and the holes are placed wrong. There is enough extra material in the kit to build your own.
It is important to dry-fit all of the parts before gluing as the pieces do not always fit perfectly. What a challenge! To start with the fuselage is the easiest part to build, then comes the fun. As usual the plans are well printed but the photos are very hard to see the detail needed. All the balsa and ply parts were very well laser cut. If the parts were numbered it would have helped a lot. After completing the fuselage the challenge started. Clear your head and work area, get some coffee (or lots), play some music and with the fantastic help of the great people who have posted information in the international files tab you have your wing made. It is one where you need to take your time. A week later I have a great plane sitting on my table waiting for a calm day and calm mind for the maiden. Thanks Hobby King.Good kit in some respects very poor instructions some parts too short or extra requires some previous model building skills
