Found a small problem

Jul 29, 2019

I managed to buy two more of these motors and the later ones are a bit different than I described, first they are 2 mm shaft (the first one I bought was actually 2.3 mm) so it is near impossible to find quality folding props to fit it. It would still work great for gliders if you used a smaller fixed blade prop such as a 6 x 3, the drag would not be much of a problem.
Second, I expect the 2 mm shaft would be much easier to bend in a crash. Maybe too easy- and I don't see replacement shafts available, and even more so with a fixed prop.
I did find a source for 2 mm x 30 mm folding props. Sky-Holic (Hobby Electronics) in Korea makes them, I just haven't figured out where to buy them yet. They are aluminum with a 6 mm yoke. Sky-Holic also makes props to fit in a wide range of sizes starting at 6 x 3 and up for 6 mm yokes.
FYI, I did try clamping a 2.3 collet (folding prop spinner) onto the shaft and it does work, I had to open up the slot a bit and it only clamped down on the end but I flew the model several times without a problem. It will wiggle a bit but not come off- if you try this check it every few flights to be safe.

It got better, I'm happy with it. I'll post problems later but none so far

Dec 25, 2018

I installed the motor in a Bridi Kastaway glider. It was originally for "grenade" launch whatever that means. The motor was easy to install using a plywood firewall drilled to match the holes in the front of the motor. Actually I used the laser cut firewalls available for RadicaRC webstore.
I ran the motor with a Graupner 6 x 3 folding prop and a Turnigy Nano-Tech 950 3S battery, I also used a 12 amp ESC. With a full charge the motor produced 110 watts at 11.5 amps. Since I am only running the motor for a few seconds there was no problem. With a slight throttle back I could run it at the 10 amp rating. Of course as the battery discharges there was no problem with full throttle. I have not seen any issues with heat yet.
The model weighs 13 ounces ready to fly and this motor prop combo pulled it skyward at a very fast rate. It will hit 400' in about 15 seconds or a bit less.
It's a little noisy but I am very happy with the setup. I may try other props later, there are a few on eBay that are also 6 x 3 folding props. I also tried it with a 2S battery and got about 50 watts with it- near the equivalent of a half A nitro motor. It would work fine on a little lighter glider- say about 10 to 12 ounces but I really am liking the perfomance with the 3S Nano-Tech 950 so I doubt I use 2S with this motor.
This will be great for converting the older hand launch gliders to electric. Most were 1.5 meter span (59") down to 52" span. It's easy to build these gliders in the 10 to 14 ounce range. I am also putting a tow hook on the models to use with a 50 Meter high start (25' rubber, 12" leader with tow hook and pennant, and enough line to make it all 164' or 50 meters.
I'm happy.

So far so good

May 08, 2018

I wanted to get the first info out asap. Two things to note, the shaft is 2.3 mm, not 2.0 as described. Pictures don't show the front of the housing so it may help to know there are 6 drilled and threaded holes on the front. They are in pairs with different centers for each pair. I was able to find a mount that matched one set of holes easily. I expect it is the most common center to center sizes.
I will report more later. I intend to use the motor to convert small RC gliders to electric launch. This motor looks like a good way to do it. The motor is the same can size (but a bit shorter) than the Graupner Inline 400, and a lot cheaper.
