Log On, Take Off: A Social Media Platform for RC Pilots

RCPilot.com is the newest and most innovative online platform for RC enthusiasts ever to hit the internet. That’s a bold claim by the creators of RCPilot that we wanted to test. Here’s what we found.

The new platform starts with a familiar social media interface. But that’s where the similarities end. Unlike conventional social media sites which focus on getting users to blow through content and click the “next” thing they see, RCPilot uses dedicated RC specialty and topic filters to allow users to easily find exactly what they are looking for or just browse. Anyone who has ever searched for a specific post or specific content on Facebook, or any RC forum currently out there knows exactly what we’re talking about. We found RCPilot easy to use, with best of breed RC articles and videos, a dedicated model aviation community, including the AMA and RC Brands, and dozens of more features that make interacting with fellow pilots both fun and professional. Pilots have access to guides, model aviation articles, and more without having to scroll through months of posts, off-topic rants, or personal harassment.

Get Relevant, Accessible RC Content

One look at the RCPilot home page had us smiling. With left and right filters visible on desktop (and accessible on mobile by tapping the floating “Filters” tab, we immediately understood the primary difference between RCPilot and everything else.

Get Relevant, Accessible RC Content

No more scrolling through months of old posts, bouncing from group to group or wading through threads to find what you’re looking for. No more random suggested content that’s not to your interests or liking! By setting the specialty filters to your favorite RC topic, you get what you want. You can always relax the filters if you feel like venturing into other areas of RC. When you go to post, you get to set the appropriate specialties and topics (limit of 2 each per post) and even link your post to an event or a specific product. This makes every post discoverable today or years from now, all with a few clicks or keywords.

Unlike other platforms, RCPilot has an “asking advice” type of post that enables fellow pilots to upvote or downvote answers to the original poster’s question. This means only the best advice, feedback, photos, or videos stay at the top of the post answers. All other low-quality replies are kept at a safe distance.

Pilots can also earn airline-style ranks based on the number of followers they have. People will naturally follow members who post insightful and interesting content. Members can also include their club, special designations, and modeling association icon on their profiles (like AMA, MAAA, MAAC, etc.).

Step-by-Step Build Stories

When sharing build stories on other platforms, Pilots had to either post all their photos or videos separately for each section of the build or had to deal with replies breaking how their build stories looked on the thread.

RCPilot.com solved those problems with a new approach that lets pilots find build or “how-to” stories by topic and mouse over the titles of each “chapter” within the story. Pilots can cut directly to the chapter that interests them or read each chapter. The photos, videos, and comments for each chapter are kept together with the comments for that chapter, making for a seamless experience. Authors can post chapters at their convenience knowing that people following the story will receive a notification each time a new chapter is posted.

Step-by-Step Build Stories

If you’re into regular articles, you can write, tag, and publish them as before. RCPilot.com offers the benefit of making articles readily accessible with options to associate them with up to 2 specialties or topics to encourage quality content for cultivating a usable body of knowledge for new or experienced pilots. As of this time, article authors must be pre-approved by RCPilot to keep the quality of content at a high level.

Who’s Flying Where?

We have been stunned by how rapidly RCPilot has rolled out innovative features. One of the most unique is “Who’s Flying Where,” a simple but useful service that lets you know when your friends are planning to fly over the coming 7 days. Pilots can quickly post their “flight plans” for the coming week and the system will notify all “followers” of that pilot’s flying activity and place a green icon on the map of all flying venues within the user’s area. Users who navigate to the flying club’s landing page can also see the pilots who plan to fly during the coming week.

Personalized Events, Integrated with RC Clubs/Associations

The RCPilot event system does what none other does; it connects all posts about an event with the event listing on the site. You can easily contribute to related events, confirm your attendance, and even search for past events to see all associated comments, photos, or videos from those events. RC Clubs can also set up a free page on RCPilot. This allows clubs to post club-only events, club-only bulletins and allows members to view fellow members’ classified ads and flying plans.

A Global Flying Club: Log On, Take Off

The RCPilot community is like a global flying club. If fellow pilots and RC hobbyists invest their time to participate, they will immediately benefit from building and supporting their own community without the drawbacks of social media or forums.
