Low and slow since 1929; the mantra of the Pietenpol Aircamper. It was designed as an airplane anyone could build in their garage with modest tools and basic wood working skills. Bernie Pietenpol made the Aircamper a plane almost everyone could afford. In addition to low cost materials, instead of expensive aero engines, Bernie used converted Ford Model A auto engines which were plentiful in those days. The large high set parasol wing offered a great view for pilots and docile handling. Plans were available through the printed Flying and Gliding manuals. Over the years Aircampers have appeared in a variety of configurations using everything from Continental A-65's, converted Corvair auto engines, to even some small radial engines. To this day Pietenpols can still be found under construction due to the continued availability of plans and sub-assemblies from homebuilder suppliers and builder support communities.

The HobbyKing Pietenpol Aircamper faithfully re-creates Bernie Pietenpol's vision. Arriving as an almost ready to fly airframe, you the builder just needs to complete final assembly and install your choice of electronics. The two piece wing slides together, connected by a carbon tube spar, and supported by aluminum support struts that bolt to the fuselage. Mounting your motor couldn't be easier with the laser etched alignement marks on the motor box adding to the ease of aligning the epoxy fiberglass cowl later. Pre-bent and welded wire landing gear attaches quickly, as do the non-functional wing struts. A complete hardware package that includes control horns, pushrods, and wheels, along with a full color photo illustrated instruction manual completes the model.

Arriving at the field, just slide a battery in through the hatch in the botttom of the fuselage and prepare for some fun. The wheel axel placement is perfect to simply power up, tail lifts on its own, then when enough speed has been reached, will lift off nicely. It makes for fun touch-and-go landings. Just play with the power. A low wing loading means it will fly quite slowly at minimal power settings. Being a sport scale model, it is a virtual blank canvas for adding as much or as little detail as you desire. Just a few evenings of work and you can be barnstorming like Bernie Pietenpol!

The HobbyKing Pietenpol Aircamper is a fun, slow flying sport scale model that lives up to the vision Bernie Pietenpol saw for the aviation industry.

This is a well presented and finished kit of parts. I am looking forward to assembling and flying the model.

However, I have a couple of reservations.

First, and most important, why has Hobby King recommended 35/48 size 800 Watt motors weighing 170gm with maximum current ratings of 50 and 55 Amps and then specified a 40Amp ESC. I will be looking at other motor ESC and prop. options and doing some bench testing before motor installation. I am particularly impressed with the Turnigy LB 3010B 420W 40A max. motor which will match the quoted model weight of 1600gm with its static thrust quoted at 1650gm.

HK specify a 50-60A ESC for this motor - go figure!

Second, the tail group is very light and not very stiff so it will be interesting to see if it needs bracing when assembled.

Happy landings, Mark.

the piet got here in very good shape. putting it together went well the instruction book leave a lot to be desired but what that lacks the air frame makes up for. I used a old motor and speed control from my durfly corsair. it is a perfect match. i used 3 9g servos one on each aileron and rudder and 1 16g on elevator.
remember keep it light. light is flight.
all right the first flight. it went uneventful a little bit of down trim.
it is very stable and flies very much like the full size counter part. it will loop with a little power, rolls are very difficult and sloppy, maybe more differential in the ailerons will help, but the full scale did not have any. you must use rudder
Over all it flyes great MY NEW FAVORITE PLANE

I received the kit yesterday, real quick since it was stil in transit when I ordered it last week.
The kit is beautiful crafted, great covering job!
Also inluded is a clear building manual on quality paper and nice photographs.
As soon as the setup arrives from HK China, I will build the plane and fly it. I will post an update by then.
